Van Bronckhorst had an educated left leg and began his professional career at RKC Waalwijk in the Netherlands, later arriving at Feyenoord in Rotterdam. After five years in the football of his country, the defender tried his luck in other nations parading through the Rangers of Scotland, Arsenal of England and Barcelona of Spain. He finally returned to the Netherlands in 2007 to play again with Feyenoord from Rotterdam and retire there in 2010.

The renowned defender won titles with almost all the clubs where he played and his record is one of the widest for a footballer from his country in recent years, being made up of the following: two Netherlands Cups with Feyenoord; one Scottish League Cup, two Scottish Cups and two Scottish Premier League with Rangers; a Premier League and two FA Cups with Arsenal, as well as a UEFA Champions League, two league titles and two Spanish Super Cups.
