The German international Timo Werner justified his change of scenery from Leipzig to English Chelsea due to the set of conditions offered by the Premier League team, according to an interview with the sports portal Sportbuzzer.
“There were some important clubs that fought for me. Chelsea's complete offer was the best for me, for my way of playing and for my career”said the 24-year-old forward. Werner explained that money had “the smallest role” in his decision. “Otherwise, I could have gone to China,” he said.
The former Leipzig player also praised Chelsea as one of the main clubs in European football: “They are a very good team of high quality, with which we will be able to fight at the top.”
With 28 Bundesliga goals, Werner ended the season as the top scorer in the history of the Leipzig club in the German league. After his last game with the Saxon club last Saturday, the striker will no longer play the final Champions League playoffs with him in August.
“Of course it hurts me not to be able to help achieve great success now, but from July 1 I will be a Chelsea player and Chelsea will pay me”, Werner argued.
Before the outbreak of the pandemic, Leipzig overcame the knockout round of the Champions League against Tottenham by a 4-0 aggregate and Chelsea has the second leg against Bayern Munich (they lost at home 0-3 in the first leg).
