Vueling closes the bases of Madrid, Oviedo and A Coruña

Vueling has decided to close the Madrid Barajas, Oviedo and A Coruña bases. This has been communicated in a letter to the staff to which elEconomista has had access in which he recalls that “one of the fundamental pillars that we are following to manage this crisis is to adjust our costs as much as possible to our level of activity”.

The airline of Group IAG During 2020, it eliminated the overnight stay of aircraft at six of its bases, Madrid, A Coruña, Oviedo, Santiago de Compostela, Valencia and Alicante, due to the national and international mobility restrictions that were imposed. Now, according to the same document, “we have made the decision to close our crew bases in A Coruña, Oviedo and Madrid with effect from April 1, 2022. We will continue to fly to these destinations, but we will not have overnight aircraft, so a crew base is not necessary.”

The company recalls that the objective was gradually resume activity once demand has recovered. Although it plans to operate in the summer with the same level of activity as in 2019, “demand will not be distributed in the same way as before,” he says.

In the letter, the company recalls that a few months ago, “to face all the challenges that the pandemic was going to leave us”, the strategic plan called Vueling Transform was launched. Within this plan, the Advanced Network Design initiative is a key element to be more efficient and address the design of Vueling’s route network, taking into account all elements such as the efficient use of aircraft and routes from a of emissions or help punctuality ratios.

“It has been a difficult decision and I want to thank you for your extraordinary support during the crisis and your trust and commitment to Vueling. We continue working to build the Vueling of the future,” concludes the letter signed by the company’s COO, Oliver Iffert.
