Vondrousova achieves her first ‘Grand Slam’ at Wimbledon

The Czech defeated Tunisian Ons Jabeur in straight sets (6-4, 6-4)

She is the first player of the Open Era to conquer the London ‘big’ without being seeded

MADRID, 15 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova has won the title at Wimbledon, the third ‘Grand Slam’ of the season, after beating Tunisian Ons Jabeur (6-4, 6-4) in the final this Saturday, a result that allows the European player to raise the first ‘big’ of her career.

In this way, Vondrousova, current number 42 in the world, becomes the first player to win the London tournament title without being seeded, all after surprising the number six in the WTA ranking.

Thus, she manages to make up for her last two major defeats, in the 2019 Roland Garros final -against the then number one Asleigh Barty- and in the final of the Tokyo Olympics -against the Swiss Belinda Bencic-.

This Saturday, on the center court of the All England Club, she barely needed an hour and 20 minutes of play to defeat Jabeur, also a finalist last year in London against the eventual champion Elena Rybakina.

The African started with a 2-0 start that Vondrousova neutralized with a ‘counterbreak’. Again, the Czech dropped serve in the sixth game, but rallied to win the next four and take the lead.

Already in the second, he started breaking, but Jabeur managed to turn the game around (1-3). Two new breaks allowed Vondrousova to regain control and close the duel on her second match point.
