Vingegaard wins on Monte Petrano and gives the final blow to the Tirreno-Adriatico

MADRID, 9 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard won this Saturday the sixth and penultimate stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico race, held over 180 kilometers between Sassoferrato and Monte Petrano in Cagli, whose summit the Visma-Lease a Bike leader reached with half a minute ahead compared to the Spanish Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates), who also secured his second place in the general classification.

With a final time of 4:31:57 at the finish line, Vingegaard showed off being the first Dane to lead the Tirreno-Adriatico since Rolf Sorensen in 1998. To link this mountainous triumph with that of the day before in Valle Castellana, this time the Visma player forged his main key 6 km from the finish, with Ayuso barely holding on for a few meters.

At least the Barcelonan did not get discouraged and completed the day at the wheel of the Australian Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe), in the middle of their fight to stay in second position overall while the Mexican Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) added excitement to the ending with an arreón.

However, the steep climb to Mount Petrano was a very difficult mission for the Mexican to surprise Ayuso or Hindley hunting. Nor did they cut the half-minute advantage that the Dane enjoyed until he achieved his 33rd victory after six years as a professional cyclist.

26 seconds behind Vingegaard, Ayuso was faster in the sprint to beat Hindley. The Dane was already 54 seconds ahead of the Spaniard thanks to another show of strength in Friday’s stage, so this other gap showed who will presumably win the title of champion.
