Villa: “More Spanish players should have the Ballon d’Or for what they have achieved in recent years”

MADRID, 31 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Former soccer player David Villa assured that, although he is not complaining about not having a Ballon d’Or, “more Spanish players should” have the prestigious award “for what has been achieved in recent times”, while acknowledging that he has had now “more offers from the Kings League” than in “his entire” career.

“I’m not complaining (for not receiving a Ballon d’Or), because I achieved many more things than I would have dreamed of, but I do believe that more Spanish players should have the Ballon d’Or for what has been achieved in recent times”, Villa admitted this Tuesday in statements provided by Socios.com at the Callao theaters in Madrid before the Spanish ‘premiere’ of ‘Spider-Man: Crossing the Multi-Verse’.

Villa, who came as a LaLiga ambassador, reviewed his career since he signed for Sporting de Gijón from Langreo, at the age of 16, when he realized that being a footballer was a real dream. “Upon arriving at Mareo I was aware that the perspective had changed, that I was no longer playing to have fun, but to become a footballer,” he explained.

During that long and successful career, the world champion with Spain in 2010 has been under the orders of coaches such as Pep Guardiola, Diego Simeone, Luis Aragonés and Vicente del Bosque, among others. However, he does not believe that his future is on the bench. “I don’t see myself as a coach, I have it clear. The coaches put in a lot of hours and I retired to have more time,” he joked.

“I retired wanting to retire, to have more time to spend with my family and do other things, and three years later I think I made the right decision,” he added about his goodbye to professional football.

However, he could continue on the pitch in the near future as a Kings League player, Gerard Piqué’s project and various ‘streamers’. “I’ve had more offers from the Kings League than in my entire active career,” he said. “In the future I don’t know, but at the moment I’m not going to play,” he added.

Finally, Villa valued the integration of new technologies in football. “Interest in football remains the same, what changes is how we consume it. Before, all attention was focused on the game, because there were no other distractions. Now from time to time we look at our mobile phones, look at statistics, check what is being commenting on social networks. Technology helps us to be connected to our team at all times,” he concluded.
