MADRID, 27 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Spanish Vanesa Chichón has been chosen as the third best fencing referee in the saber category in the 2022-23 season by the International Fencing Federation (FIE), as announced this Wednesday by the Royal Spanish Federation (RFEE).
Vanesa Chichón is the first Spaniard to be selected among the best referees in the world and, in addition, she is the first woman in the history of world fencing to achieve this prestigious recognition.
Added to this historic achievement is that, for the first time in the Senior Men’s Saber World Championships held in Milan (Italy), Chichón refereed the individual final.
Chichón began as a saber fencer and referee under the tutelage of the teacher and international referee José Luis Álvarez, at the Leganés Fencing Club.
Her career led her to obtain an international qualification in 2013 and, from there, she has constantly accumulated experience and knowledge. His inclusion in the FIE Master List of referees in 2017 marked a milestone in his career, culminating in the historic achievements of 2023.
The most outstanding referees in the saber category have been the Bulgarian Vasil Milenchev, in first position, followed by the Hungarian Miklos Kosa. In third position Vanesa Chinchón is tied with the Italian Luigi Martilotti.
