Van Marwijk made history until 2012

The Dutch team has been one of the teams that has played the best and has won the least. His record is reduced to Euro 88 and there are up to three World Cup finals. It can be interpreted as having lost three finals or as having reached three finals, depending on how you see the glass. And Bert van Marwijk was responsible for the 2010 one.

With no more success than a UEFA Cup and a KNVB Beker with Feyenoord, he was chosen to forget the bad experience with Marco van Basten at the helm. The qualifying phase was impeccable, winning all eight of the group's matches and conceding just two goals in favor. The generation really was spectacular: Van der Vaart, Sneijder, Robben and Van Persie at their best. Van Marwijk was the director of an orchestra that had experience in defense (a line of 35, 30, 27 and 28 years), a lot of muscle in the double pivot (Van Bommel and De Jong) and a usual Champions attack front.

Under his leadership, the Netherlands only lost eight games (52 in four years). In August 2011, he rose to number 1 in the FIFA rankings and achieved the greatest win in its history (11-0 to San Marino). But in 2012, and with a contract until 2015, he had no choice but to resign after falling in the group stage of the Euro Cup. It was a complicated group with Denmark, Germany and Portugal, but the team was an absolute disaster and lost all three games.
