Van der Poel reigns in the ‘Hell of the North’ and revalidates his crown in Paris-Roubaix

MADRID, 7 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) has won this Sunday the 121st edition of the Paris-Roubaix classic, held over 259.7 kilometers between Compiègne and the Roubaix velodrome, and revalidates the title with his sixth ‘monument’ achieved last year.

Just a week after being declared the winner of the Tour of Flanders, the grandson of Raymond Poulidor and king of cyclocross and also of the cobblestones once again demonstrated that he is the best classicomaniac of today with an attack almost 60 kilometers from the finish line, in Orchies, that no one could follow.

With a time of 5:25:58 and an average of 47.8 kilometers per hour, he crossed the finish line three minutes ahead of the Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), his teammate and also second last year, the Danish Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and German Nils Politt (UAE Emirates).

In this way, Van der Poel thus conquers the sixth ‘monument’ of his career, after being crowned champion three times in the Tour of Flanders (2020, 2022 and 2024), once in Milan-San Remo (2023) and twice in Paris-Roubaix (2023 and 2024).

From the beginning, the attacks continued in the ‘Hell of the North’, although Alpecin-Deceuninck, Van der Poel’s team, ensured that they did not bear fruit. However, in the first cobblestone section with 100 kilometers covered, the wind caused the first fans, falls and cuts in the group, like the one that condemned the Spaniards Iván García Cortina and Oier Lazkano (Movistar).

The runners passed the new chicane in the Wallers forest without problems, but first, 96 kilometers from the finish line, the world champion, dressed in his rainbow jersey, gave the first warning, to which Pedersen and the Dutchman Mick van Dijke (Visma) responded. -Lease a Bike). However, they were soon caught.

With 60 kilometers to go, still with two cobbled sections ahead, Mons-en-Pevele and the Carrefour de l’Arbre, Van der Poel dealt the final blow to the race and left alone with his usual change of pace; While the others suffered, the Dutchman enjoyed.

Little by little he increased his distance from the desperate pursuers and entered the Roubaix velodrome unopposed to confirm his victory in the great spring classic and his third victory of the year. The Amstel Gold Race and the Liège-Bastogne-Liège are now waiting for you to continue making history.
