Uncertainty in soccer in Ecuador continues after the virtual meeting between the FEF and Conmebol

The virtual meeting this Wednesday between executives of the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) and members of the Disciplinary Commission of the Conmebol to analyze the power struggle in the federative entity, it ended without announcements and maintained the atmosphere of uncertainty among the clubs.

The videoconference meeting, to which the press had no access, had planned to review the struggle in the direction of the FEF generated after the president, Francisco Egas, was removed from office by the directory controversially and replaced by Jaime Estrada last April 24.

“We know that the session was extensive, with the presentation of documents by Francisco Egas, Jaime Estrada and other members of the Board of Directors, within the file that was opened to them at Conmebol,” said a source close to the Federation.

Conmebol has decided to open files for those involved to find out the details of the Board's actions.

The source assured that the executives involved with the files are prohibited from the Conmebol giving declarations until the conflict is resolved and, in fact, none of them answered the journalists' calls today.

He also stated that at the meeting no resolution was established, so the fight continues without a date set for a final solution by Conmebol, the governing body of South American football.

Last April, six members of the FEF Board of Directors made the decision to remove Egas for alleged violations of the regulations, including having exceeded the financial amount established for hiring the technical staff for the national team, commanded by the Hispanic- Dutch Jordi Cruyff.

The controversy was deepened by a statement by Egas, who said he managed a significant reduction in the salary of the technical staff in response to the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, although later it was verified that it was a restructuring to pay a certain amount this year and complete the balance next.

Directors of various provincial clubs and associations asked the General Secretariat of the FEF the convocation to an Extraordinary Congress to know, analyze and decide on the actions of the Board of Directors. This Congress was held on May 1 last and there the majority of clubs and various associations ratified the removal of the position to Egas and the confirmation as president of Estrada.

Egas, in an attempt to prevent Congress from taking place, resorted to ordinary justice with a protective action against Estrada and the other five managers, a procedure prohibited in the regulations of international football, for which reason Conmebol opened a file for Egas.
