UEFA dismisses Slovan elimination due to several positive coronavirus

The UEFA Appeal Committee decided on Thursday to consider Slovan of Bratislava forfeited the match of the first qualifying round of the Champions League that they were supposed to face Klaksvík, from the Faroe Islands, which had to be suspended twice due to the cases of coronavirus detected in the Slovak community.

“Declare Bratislava Slovan forfeited the Champions League first qualifying round match between Klaksvík and Slovan Bratislava, which was originally scheduled for August 19, 2020 by a result of 3-0 according to Annex I.2.1 of the Champions League Regulations “, states the UEFA ruling. Before traveling to the Faroe Islands, the entire Bratislava Slovan expedition tested negative, but the additional test carried out upon arrival revealed a positive COVID-19 in one of its members, so the local authorities decided to quarantine everything the team.

Given this fact and At the request of Slovan Bratislava, the match originally scheduled for August 19 was delayed to 21, in order for the club to provide a list of players who tested negative and were eligible to play the match. However, after the new tests, a player from this second group had two positive results in the COVID-19 test on consecutive days, so the Faroese authorities decided to quarantine the entire second group of Slovan Bratislava players and officials. A fact that prevented the match from being played on the new scheduled date, On August 21.

The problem was transferred to the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body, which decided “given the urgency of the matter” to refer the case to Appeals committee, which this Thursday decided to give the match lost 3-0 to Slovan from Bratislava. The same decision that the UEFA Appeals Committee made in relation to the Europa League qualifying round match between Gibraltar's Lincoln Red Imps and Kosovo's Prishtina, scheduled for August 18, after giving the Kosovar team 8 new positives in the second test to which he submitted in Gibraltar, after the cases that initially forced him to postpone the match.
