UEFA commissions an independent report to clarify what happened in the Champions League final

MADRID, 30 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

UEFA announced this Monday that it has commissioned the preparation of an independent report to shed light on everything that happened in the moments prior to the Champions League final on Saturday the 28th at the Saint-Denis Stadium in Paris.

The match between the English Liverpool and Real Madrid had to be delayed until 9:30 p.m. due to the fact that in the run-up to the match, the turnstiles in the back where the ‘red’ supporters were supposed to stand “were blocked by thousands of fans who had bought tickets false ones that did not work”, indicated the continental organism.

“As the number of people outside the stadium continued to increase after kick-off, the police dispersed them with tear gas and forced them out of the stadium. UEFA stands in solidarity with those affected by these events and will urgently review these matters together with the French police and authorities, as well as the French Football Federation,” added the body chaired by Aleksander Ceferin.

“UEFA announced this Monday that it has commissioned an independent report into the events surrounding the Champions League final. This comprehensive review will examine the decision-making, accountability and behaviors of all entities involved in the final.” the association stressed on Monday.

According to this, it will be Dr. Tiago Brandão Rodrigues, who will direct the production of this review and that “to guarantee his independence in the process, he agreed to carry out this task free of charge”. The Portuguese is a member of the Parliament of his country and president of the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment and Energy, and was also Minister of Education (also responsible for Sports and Youth) between 2015 and 2022, member of the Council of the World Agency Foundation Anti-Doping (2019-2021) and was the Portuguese Olympic Attaché during the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

“Evidence will be collected from all relevant parties and the conclusions of the independent report will be made public once completed. Upon receipt of the conclusions, UEFA will assess the next steps,” he said.

The French authorities, through Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, Minister of Sports, have held Liverpool fans responsible for these security problems on Monday, while from London, the Minister of Culture of the British Government, Nadine Dorries, called on Sunday UEFA to open a formal investigation.
