UEFA bans rainbow lighting in Germany-Hungary

The UEFA has rejected a request from the mayor of Munich so that the city stadium is illuminated with the colors of the rainbow for the match of the Euro 2020 of wednesday between Germany Y Hungary.

The mayor of Munich, Dieter reiter, had said that he wanted to illuminate the stadium with the colors in protest against a new law in Hungary that prohibits the dissemination of content in schools that is considered to promote homosexuality and gender change.

The Allianz Arena, home to Bayern Munich, is set up to allow the entire outdoor area and roof to be illuminated in various colors.

In a statement, UEFA suggested alternative dates for the gesture during the tournament.

“UEFA, through its statutes, is a politically and religiously neutral organization. Given the political context of this specific request, a message pointing to a decision taken by the Hungarian national parliament, UEFA must reject this request, ”the organization said in a statement.

“However, UEFA has proposed to the city of Munich to illuminate the stadium in rainbow colors on June 28, Christopher Street Liberation Day, or between July 3 and 9, which is the week Christopher Street Day in Munich ”.

Christopher Street Day events are held in memory of a gay uprising in New York in 1969.
