Two-time Olympian Anjelina Nadai Lohalith will lead the Refugee Team at the World Cup in Budapest

Two-time Olympian Anjelina Nadai Lohalith will lead the six-athlete group representing the Refugee Athletes Team (ART) at the 2023 World Championships in Athletics taking place in Budapest, Hungary from August 19-27.

Lohalith, 28, originally from South Sudan, competed in the 1,500m at the Rio and Tokyo Olympics and at the 2017 and 2022 World Championships. Late last year, she moved up in distance and focused on the 5,000 meters, a distance that he will run in the Hungarian capital, which he reaches with a time of 15:33.85.

The long-distance runner will be accompanied by the Eritrean Tachlowini Gabriyesos, another Olympic athlete in Tokyo and so far the most successful ART athlete, since he finished 16th in the marathon of the previous Olympic event, in which he was the team’s standard bearer. He will be accompanied on the starting line by the Ethiopian Omar Hassan, who is making his debut with the team.

Syrian long jumper Mohammad Amin Alsalami is also competing in the ART for the first time and in Budapest he will become the first refugee athlete to compete in a technical discipline at the World Championships.

The team is completed by the Moroccan Fouad Idbafdil, who will participate for the second time in the World Athletics Championships in the 3,000 obstacles, and the young woman from South Sudan, Perina Lokure Nakang, who was part of the first program of the U-20 Refugee Team of the World Athletics and will compete in the 800 meters.

The team leader in the championship will be Kenyan athlete Janeth Jepkosgei, 800m world champion in 200m. In addition, World Athletics announced Thursday that its global partner ASICS has become the official sponsor of ART.
