Two-time Gold Glove On O’Neill is traded by the Cards to the Red Sox.

Two-time Gold Glove On O’Neill is traded by the Cards to the Red Sox.

Right-hander Robertson joined the Sox in July of last year as part of the trade that sent Kiké Hernández return to the Dodgers. Santos recovered form an elbow injury last year, which prevented him from pitching.

The Red Sox have three left-handed hitters in their outfield: Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran, and Masataka Yoshida. O’Neill helps to balance out this lineup.

Manager Alex Cora has two right-handed hitting outfielders at his disposal in O’Neill and Rob Refsnyder.

Ceddanne Rafaela, a stellar center field defender and MLB Pipeline’s third-ranked Red Sox prospect, is very certain to start the season in Triple-A now that O’Neill is involved.

During the Winter Meetings earlier this week, Cardinals President for Baseball Operations John Mozeliak stated that the team was likely to trade O’Neill because it had chosen to move forward with an outfield starting lineup that included Jordan Walker, Tommy Edman, and Lars Nootbaar, with Dylan Carlson as the primary backup in 2024.

O’Neill expressed his desire to participate every day without holding back, and the Cardinals agreed, which was a factor in the team trading him.

And there was the matter of his contract. O’Neill made $4.95 million in revenue in his most recent season, which is his last before becoming a free agent. O’Neill is expected to earn $5.85 million when he goes to arbitrator this winter, according to Cot’s contracts.

After hitting.286 with 34 home runs and 80 RBIs in 2021, O’Neill was in sixth place in the NL MVP vote. Despite having a.248 average & 78 home runs in his six-year career, he hasn’t produced anything quite as much since or before.

O’Neill is in the last year of his arbitration eligibility, and following the 2024 campaign, he could become a free agent. He is expected to make $5.5 million a year.

Robertson pitched in 18 games for the Dodgers and Red Sox in the previous season, going 0-1 with a 6.04 ERA.

Santos has a 23-48 record and a 5.21 ERA in seven seasons with the Tigers, Rockies, Rangers, Brewers, Pirates, Reds, and Orioles.

He missed all of 2023 due to a right elbow injury. He will be sent to the lower levels, according to the Cardinals.

Cardinals President those Baseball Operations John Mozeliak stated in a statement, “We felt this deal worked effectively in addressing both of those issues as we look to add bullpen depth as well as address worries regarding potential time in the outfield.”

“We feel Victor adds depth to our minor league system, and we are excited to add Nick to our bullpen.” Robertson pitched in 18 games for the Dodgers and Red Sox in the previous season, going 0-1 with a 6.04 ERA.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, who selected the 6-6, 265-pound Robertson in the seventh round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of James Madison University, saw him make his MLB debut in 2023.

Robertson, who has thrown mainly as a reliever for the Dodgers and Red Sox this past season, has struck out 231 batters in his 184.2 innings pitched as a professional, including 26 of his 22.1 combined innings as a rookie.

Robertson punched out 58 batters in 42.2 innings pitched between Oklahoma City and Worcester at Triple-A last season. On July 25, 2023, he was dealt to the Red Sox as part of a three-player trade that also sent Kiké Hernández the Los Angeles.

Santos, a Dominican Republic native, was first signed by Philadelphia in November 2016 as an international free agent.

He was dealt by Boston in July 2021, and in February of last year, he was invited to the Red Sox Major League spring training session despite not being on the roster.
