Tribute to Lorenzo Sanz

This Sunday at 9:00 p.m. is a special day for the Madrid fans: the first game with an audience at the Santiago Bernabéu since the pandemic began (against Celta). The reunion of the fans with the players will also serve as a tribute to all those who have passed away during this long period, with a very special memory: Lorenzo Sanz, former president of Real Madrid.

“This Sunday we return to the Bernabéu and a well-deserved tribute will be paid to my father, who did a lot for this club to make it what it is today. It will be a very special day for the whole family, ”wrote his son Lorenzo on Twitter. In his day, Florentino Pérez said that “from the club we are going to do everything that his figure and his legacy deserve to pay him the tribute that all Madrid fans want. Lorenzo deserves great recognition. A tribute in that Santiago Bernabéu stadium that he kept coming to every game to feel his team. Now, as we all know, it is not possible but of course we will carry it out when the right circumstances arise ”. In compliance with what has been said, the club will pay tribute to him on the first occasion in which it has been possible.

Lorenzo Sanz died on March 21, 2020 at the age of 76, at the Jiménez Díaz Foundation at the beginning of confinement, due to complications contracted after being infected by coronavirus. He was president of Real Madrid from November 1995 to July 2000. Under his mandate came the long-awaited Seventh European Cup of Real Madrid, in the 1997-98 campaign, a trophy that the club had not lifted for 32 years. In total, the club achieved during his presidency two Champions, an Intercontinental Cup, a League and a Spanish Super Cup, as well as a League and a Basketball Cup Winners' Cup.

In addition to honoring Lorenzo Sanz, Madrid will also have a special memory for all those who have lost their lives during this period, such as Antic, Goyo Benito or Ico Aguilar, among others. At the time they could not receive the recognition of the Madrid public because the games were behind closed doors, but this Sunday the fans will have the opportunity to give them the applause and affection they deserve.
