MADRID, 13 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, the English club confirmed on Monday.
The Uruguayan international opened the scoring for Spurs in Saturday’s defeat against Leicester City (4-1) in the Premier League before leaving the field limping. Bentancur collided with Leicester’s Senegalese midfielder Nampalys Mendy shortly after the hour mark.
Tottenham confirmed in a statement on Monday that the 25-year-old “has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season.” Now, he will undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation.
Bentancur has played 26 of Tottenham’s 32 games this season, forming a solid midfield pairing with Dane Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. His absence joins that of his teammate Yves Bissouma, who will be out indefinitely after undergoing ankle surgery on Friday.
Captain Hugo Lloris will also be sidelined for two months, while Hojbjerg is suspended for Tuesday’s Champions League round of 16 first leg in Milan.
