The Catalan swimmers Toni Ponce (CN Vilafranca) and Nuria Marqués (CN Sant Feliu) won this weekend in the second event of the year of the AXA Paralympic Swimming League, held in Palma.
Ponce repeated his victory two weeks after winning the Barcelona event, while Marqués, absolute winner in 2023, debuted at the top of the podium in 2024. In addition, a total of four Spanish records were shattered in the Municipal Pools by Son Hugo.
The Barcelona swimmer, who already has his place for the Paris Paralympic Games, reigned in the men’s category with 933 points, ahead of Enrique Alhambra (CD Aquatic Campanar) and David Sánchez (CN Pozuelo), second and third respectively. Marqués, for his part, reached 836 points, with Marian Polo (CN Barcelona) in second position and Beatriz Lérida (CN Valdepeñas) third, with 758 and 663 points, respectively.
A total of 134 athletes -73 boys and 61 girls- from 23 clubs from all over Spain gathered this Saturday and Sunday in the Balearic capital, where up to four national records were broken: Sergio Martos, in 100 butterfly S8; Isabel De la Cruz, in 100 and 200 backstroke S5; and Mikel Erdozain, in 200 backstroke S2.
This second test, like all those belonging to the AXA League, was held in the multi-disability modality, where all athletes compete together regardless of their degree or type of impairment and the one who comes closest to the world record in their class wins.
This third edition of the championship will experience its third stop on April 13 and 14 in Torrevieja. Subsequently, the event will reach Valladolid (May 4 and 5), Madrid (July 6 and 7), Cádiz (November 16 and 17) and Oviedo (December 14 and 15).
The competition is organized by the four Spanish federations of sports for people with disabilities – the Spanish Federation of Sports for the Blind (FEDC), the Sports Federation for People with Physical Disabilities (FEDDF), the Sports Federation for People with Intellectual Disabilities (FEDDI) and Sports for people with Cerebral Palsy and Acquired Brain Injury (FEDPC) – in collaboration with the AXA Foundation and the Spanish Paralympic Committee (CPE).
