Innovative idea for the PGA, which also announces economic and calendar improvements in its struggle with LIV golf
MADRID, 24 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The American golfer Tiger Woods and the Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, an association that goes beyond sharing a profession, announced this Wednesday the creation of The Golf League (TGL), a new virtual tournament that plans to attract the best players in the world, in association with the PGA.
The world of golf continues to undergo changes while still assimilating the latest, the creation of LIV golf, the Saudi circuit that has made many players confront the North American PGA and the European DP World Tour. Tiger and Rory’s announcement actually comes on the same day as a PGA meeting with “improvements” to their circuit.
The innovative and technological competition will be between six teams of three players in a stadium with fans, and will be carried out by TMRW Sports, a company dedicated to technology and its use in sports, founded by Woods and McIlroy on Tuesday. The tournaments would be played with the latest simulator technology, on Monday nights, with semifinals and finals.
The objective, and that of the PGA, of the virtual tournaments is to attract a younger audience, make dynamic broadcasts – the matches would last two hours -, and give “another opportunity to the best players to face each other”, as McIlroy added in his twitter.
The new virtual addition to the PGA calendar was accompanied this Wednesday with measures from the American circuit to increase the economic prizes in 12 tournaments. Commissioner Jay Monahan explained at a press conference that the improvement will be about 20 million dollars.
A new response that is being attempted from the United States to match LIV Golf’s bet, which has already taken some of the best players in the world, already sanctioned by the PGA and the DP World Tour. On the other hand, Monahan explains the agreement with the players to play 20 tournaments with a better schedule.
