This is the new ITV test and these are the cars that are required to pass it

Fully in a complete update of the traffic regulations, one of the points that has focused the attention of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is the passage through the Technical Inspection of Vehicles (ITV). A mandatory review for all automobiles, depending on their age, they must be renewed every a certain number of years, which in recent months brings an important novelty in the tests to pass.

Although approved throughout 2018, it has been during the last months when more attention is being paid to what is known as OBD (On Board Diagnostic). An ITV test known in Spanish as on-board diagnostics, which leaves up to 180,000 unfit vehicles each year.

This system consists of a verification of all the sensors of the car and whose main function is to assist workshops in troubleshooting. Created in California, in 1988, it enters the revisions that the OBD currently makes highlights the control of maximum emission limits, This test is done by checking the air intake to the engine or the injection system.

With a warning light, in case of detecting fault, each deficiency in the vehicle has a different code whereby the workshop can then more easily identify the problem. In addition, it is a clear help for the future since it is designed to help reduce the emission of polluting gases from the cars and motorcycles that leave the dealership every year.

Which vehicles must pass the OBD test?

This is why, since the end of 2018, the ITV requires only the most modern cars to pass this test. That is, those who were enrolled as of January 1, 2011, as well as industrials since January 1, 2014.

Also very useful for cars hybrid and electric, these have greater mechanisms to pass in the test so, “through a standard connection, the control units are connected to a reader in charge of managing the engine and, in the event of a defect, it records the failure”, comments the ITV. It is because of this added difficulty for these vehicles that almost a 10% of those analyzed annually it presents phalluses that without this tool it was not possible to detect.

When do I have to pass the ITV?

One of the great doubts of all drivers is knowing the deadline to pass the ITV. A piece of information that can be easily known by looking at the date of the vehicle and therefore the DGT is also in charge of remembering it, either by mail or by SMS. However, for the more clueless, here is this small summary according to the vehicle:

– Private cars. The first four years after registration are exempt. From then until the age of ten, the review will be passed every two years, and those over ten years old must attend an annual inspection.

– Mopeds. The first three years after registration are exempt. Every two years thereafter.

– Motorcycles, quads and quadricycles. The first four years after enrollment are exempt. Every two years thereafter.

Fines for not passing the ITV

Since June 1 of this year, the sanctions for not passing the ITV or doing it without the sticker that indicates it have changed, remaining as follows:

Fine of 200 euros, for having the ITV expired, while the vehicle is in circulation or parked on the street. The ITV must be passed immediately.

Fine of 200 euros, for driving with an unfavorable ITV. In case of serious defects, it is only possible to circulate from the inspection center to the repair shop, having to pass the ITV again within a maximum period of two months.

Fine of 500 euros, for driving with a negative ITV. In case of very serious defects, it cannot be circulated and the vehicle will have to be towed by a crane from the inspection center to the workshop, having to pass the ITV again within a maximum period of two months.

These will be the most expensive roads in Spain and the price that will be paid with the implementation of tolls
