This is the big change in the DGT that will affect cars labeled ‘B’ and ‘C’ by 2022

Just as 2021 was the year to carry out the reforms in the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), 2022 will be the year of commissioning. A long-awaited change that is already coming into force and that, during the next 365 days will bring important news both in terms of road safety and reduction of polluting emissions.

A last factor where the DGT line in the direction of the new Climate Change law. That is why among all the points of the reform, one of them emphasizes the obligation to create Low Emission Zones (ZBE) in municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, as well as in those that exceed 20,000 and do not meet certain conditions.

That is, the establishment of protected areas against the most polluting vehicles, in the style of those already put in Madrid or Barcelona, which will be marked according to the environmental labels of the DGT. Of course, even with many points ahead, since certain aspects remain in the hands of the City Councils, these will affect, above all, vehicles classified as ‘B’ and ‘C’.

This is how the ZBE will affect labels ‘B’ and ‘C’

Those passenger cars and light petrol vans registered since the January 1, 2001 and diesel from 2006 (label B) and those passenger cars and light petrol vans registered from January 2006 and diesel as of September 2015 (label C). Some cars, for the most part, that can no longer enter these two large cities according to the established parameters and that will stop, throughout 2022, also in the historic centers of up to 147 other municipalities.

In addition, as of March 21, the DGT has already established that the regulations enter into force by which exceeding these limits will entail a fine of up to 200 euros. Of course, with the possibility of being reduced at the discretion of the City Councils (in Madrid it is currently 90 and in Barcelona 100 euros), with this we want to promote the change towards sustainable transport in historic centers.

A more than important aspect of the reform of the DGT and that by 2022 will see its implementation, in order to turn around the situation in large cities against the use of older vehicles and, therefore, more pollutants.
