This is how wages remain after the rise in the SMI and how much they can rise in 2023

The rise in the Minimum Interprofessional Salary (SMI) is already a fact after it was approved by the Council of Ministers and Royal Decree 152/2022 was published in the Official State Gazette. This increase could affect more than 1.5 million people, although there are certain sectors that may be more affected, due to their characteristics.

The increase in the SMI is 35 euros to leave it in 1,000 euros per month in 14 payments o de 1,166.67 euros per month for those people who have the extra payments prorated. These amounts leave the minimum wage per day for each activity will be 33.33 euros per daywhich represents an increase of 3.63% euros.

This minimum wage, indicates the legal text, only refers to the monetary contributions made to the worker. All payments in kind are excluded from these amounts, without being able to reduce the amount of that salary to be received in money.

In addition, the increase in the minimum wage, despite being approved at the end of February, will have retroactive effect from January 1. Thus, all workers who see their salaries increased by this increase in the SMI will have to pay the amounts in arrears.

All these workers, as long as they do not exceed 120 days of activity per year in the same company, will receive a minimum amount of 47.36 euros per legal day of activity.

In this case, and due to the fact that their activity includes hourly wages, a minimum wage of 7.82 euros per hour actually worked.

How much will the minimum wage rise in 2023?

Although it will ultimately depend on talks with unions and employers (which has not been counted on in the two recent increases), the Government has a roadmap in which it plans to increase the minimum wage next year so that it reaches 60 % of the average salary of the country before the end of the legislature.

This is why, with a view to 2023, the last year of that legislature, could increase the minimum wage to 1,049 euros per month in 14 payments. Everything will depend on the negotiations with the social agents and the meetings of the Ministry of Labor with the committee of experts that already a few months ago contemplated a Minimum increase up to 1,011 euros per month for 2023 and a maximum increase of those 1,049 euros per month previously mentioned.
