Two out of two. Queen Letizia is the talisman of good luck. First, with the Spanish women’s water polo team and then, with the 20-kilometre walk. The athletic discipline ended this Thursday, August 1, with two medals for Spanish sport: silver for María Pérez and bronze for the walker Álvaro Martín Uriol. Letizia, hugging the athlete, posed at the end of the course wrapped in a large Spanish flag.
Early Thursday morning. At the Trocadero Square in Paris, Letizia followed the 20-kilometre women’s race walk, which was delayed due to unforeseen weather. The Spanish women Laura García-Caro, Cristina Montesinos and María Pérez took part in the race, the latter taking home the silver medal after an impressive performance and finishing 25 seconds behind the Chinese Yang Jiayu.
Álvaro Martín was also crowned champion, taking the bronze medal in the men’s 20-kilometre race walk category. The Queen had the opportunity to congratulate them and chat with the two-time champions in a moment of glory and euphoria for the national Olympic movement. She also shared some photographs with fans. The wife of Felipe VI chose the official red polo shirt of the national team, which bears the Spanish flag, dark slim-fit denim jeans and white trainers.
In her first appearance in Paris, yesterday, Wednesday 31st, at the Aquatic Centre in the capital, Her Majesty enthusiastically celebrated the water polo players’ 10-8 victory over the Greek women’s team in the preliminary round of group B. Quite an achievement.
