30 years ago today of the worst tragedy that was experienced in the mythical stadium of Sarrià, a terrible misfortune that shook espanyolism and the world of sport. On Sunday, March 15, 1992, it became a black day for the Catalan clubone of those days that will never be forgotten due to the misfortune suffered.
Espanyol faced Cádiz but moments before the start of the match there was a terrible accident in the stands, specifically in the area of the second amphitheater of the presidential gallery of the Sarrià stadium.
A sea flare hit the chest of the child Guillermo Alfonso Lazaro, only 13 years old, who had gone with his family to the countryside. Despite being quickly transferred to a hospital, nothing could be done for the little boy’s life.
The author of the launch of the flare was arrested and went to jail and Espanyol was also punished with a heavy financial fine.
The unfortunate event shook the world of sport terribly, one of the darkest days in the history of Espanyol, without a doubt. The parakeet team beat Cádiz 3-1, a triumph that remained totally tarnished by death of the young follower, as reflected on the cover of Mundo Deportivo on that tragic March 15, 1992.
