The WTA wants to return in June with the Charleston tournament

The American tournament of Charleston, an event that is part of the WTA calendar, It was one of the first to be suspended last April due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, the organization of the world women's circuit pretends that the tournament it takes place just two months later, in June.

As pointed out ESPN, Charleston would start the next June 23 and it would be played behind closed doors, that is, without an audience in the stands. The event could mean the return of women's tennis, since the ATP circuit is officially paralyzed until July 31. At the moment, names like those of Stephens, Kenin, Azarenka, Keys and Andreescu (who has not played in a tournament since he was injured after the US Open) are on a list of a total of 16 participants, although the format of the competition has not yet been revealed.

“First, it is a tangible way to show the world that we can bring live sports back for public enjoyment; second, it enables our community and tennis fans to support professionals, whose opportunities to compete this year have been severely limited; third, it helps us show our front-line medical professionals how much we care about us, “he explained. It should be noted that half of the tournament winnings, which will be broadcast through Tennis Chanel, they will be donated to toilets at the Medical University of South Carolina.
