The women’s 4×100, made up of Sonia Molina Prados, Jaël Sakura Bestué, Paula Sevilla and Maribel Pérez, finished in fifth place at the Eugene World Championship final in Oregon (United States), once again beating the Spanish record with a time of 42.58 .
The Spanish quartet, who qualified for the championship final for the first time on Saturday beating Spain’s record, in Sunday’s final improved their Spanish record again to achieve that fifth place, the second best European team in the event.
Sonia Molina Prados, Jaël Sakura Bestué, Paula Sevilla and Maribel Pérez once again surpassed themselves at Hayward Field, beating three continental powers such as Great Britain, Switzerland and Italy, the current champions, fourth and seventh in Europe. In the final, the United States beat the all-performing Jamaica, with the entire podium in the 100 meters. The locals achieved a time of 41.14 by 41.18 of the Antilleans.
The reliever order did not change from the playoffs. Sonia Molina Prados came out of blocks and marked a partial of 11.86 in curve with which Spain was placed in eighth position. Jaël Sakura Bestué’s acceleration in the opposite direction, with a partial of 10.24 (fifth fastest), was not enough to climb positions; but everything would change with a perfect transition from Paula Sevilla. The solanera ran the curve in 10.42 (the fourth fastest) and handed over the witness to Maribel Pérez in sixth position, although very even with Italy, who was seventh.
It was in that final stretch, where the Spanish captain became a giant. Escorted on the right by Jamaican Shericka Jackson, 200m world champion and runner-up in 100m, and on the left by American Twanisha Terry, Pérez did not succumb to pressure and showed the best version of herself. She ran the final relay in 10.06 to cross the finish line in a historic fifth place.
With this fifth place, Spain adds eight finalist places in the World Cup, including the two bronze medals of Asier Martínez in 110 hurdles and Mohamed Katir in 1,500. The record of 42.58 makes a total of 112 Spanish records broken in 2022, of which 38 have been in the absolute category, 23 of them achieved by women.
In addition, on Saturday morning in Oregon, Fátima Diame disputed the classification of the women’s length, staying out of the final by finishing in 16th position overall, ninth in her group. The Valencian athlete went up to 6.54 meters in the first round. However, she paid the two nulls she made on the second and third attempts and ended up losing places in the end.
