The ‘Women and Sports’ newsletter honors athletes who retired in 2024 in its last issue of the year

MADRID 20 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The ‘Women and Sports’ newsletter, with which the Higher Sports Council (CSD) seeks to raise the visibility of all women involved in physical activity, dedicates its last issue of the year to the athlete Sara Martínez and the field hockey player María de los Ángeles Ruiz, who announced this year her retirement from professional sports.

Sara Martínez is a benchmark in Spanish Paralympic athletics and an example of improvement. Despite bilateral corneal opacity, a genetic and hereditary disease that affects vision, at just 14 years old he participated in his first Games in Athens.

With a brilliant track record at the European and world level, the athlete announced that Paris 2024 would be her last Paralympic event. There he achieved the best of finishes: a silver medal in the long jump. Without separating herself from the sports world, Sara Martínez currently holds the position of Head of the University Sports Section at the CSD. In the interview he reflects on all the dreams achieved and all the sacrifices made.

The other main protagonist of this issue is María de los Ángeles Ruiz, a field hockey player who has been nominated twice for best goalkeeper in the world and who has played 176 games with the Spanish team. His achievements include the bronze medal at the 2018 World Championships, the bronze medal at the 2019 European Championships and the Olympic diploma at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The report on the Sports Medicine Center, which is responsible for the well-being of Spanish athletes, revolves around physical and mental health. This edition of the ‘Women and Sports’ newsletter also dedicates a space to the ‘Run For You’ project, led by the Madrid athlete Carmen Giménez, a pioneer in participation in wheelchair marathons.

Here he shares his life story, marked by adversity. An episode of gender violence caused her a spinal injury and the loss of her premature son Bruno. Despite all this, he has found motivation in sport and his goal is to complete the seven marathon majors and represent Spain at the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

The other report revolves around ‘Universe Woman III’, which is closing its most successful cycle, with a total of 121 projects and 21,663,459 euros raised in donations. All based on five fundamental pillars: training, sports development, visibility of women, leadership and health.

Its Women’s Universe Tour project stands out, which has made it possible to publicize different disciplines and athletes in the cities of Las Palmas, Toledo, Madrid and Lleida in 2024. With the publication of the ‘Women and Sports’ newsletter, the CSD promotes the visibility of women in the field of physical activity and sport, in any area and level, turning athletes, coaches, referees and leaders into the protagonists of its pages.
