Wigan Athletic was the first team to go bankrupt, beset by the financial problems that the coronavirus crisis exacerbated. The club was relegated to League One from the Championship, after suffering a 12-point penalty.
Now it seems that it begins to see the light. Wigan, which has been under the control of three administrators since last July, issued a statement informing that it has reached an agreement with a new investor. It is not known who is under the new control, since he has strongly requested his anonymity but his country of origin is known: Spain.
“We are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with an investor from Spain. The accepted offer deals not only with the sale of the club, but also allows payment to creditors non-soccer to avoid the 15-point penalty this season. Furthermore, a deposit amount has been received. We are now working with our attorneys and the investor to produce all the necessary documentation to present to the EFL so that the transfer can be completed as soon as possible. The investor has experience in football and has made it clear that he does not want his details to be made public until the sale is completed and we are respecting this anonymity. No further details will be released until EFL approval has been obtained, “reads the statement published on its website by this historic England club.
The new buyer will pay around five and a half million euros to pay all the debtors of the entity. A payment that will allow Wigan to avoid a penalty of 15 points for not being able to pay its debts. A few days ago, as pointed The Guardian, the administrators were looking for some € 4.5M to sell the club plus the DW Stadium.
