“The whole team caught COVID before coming to Australia”

Garbiñe Muguruza revealed in the press conference after her loss to Alize Cornet in the second round of the Australian Open, the reason why he could not prepare as planned for the ocean tour. “My whole team got COVID, except me, before I traveled, so it was a bit difficult to keep up with the training and preparation to compete in Sydney and try to pick up a run.” That is why the Spanish, as AS learned, did not compete in Adelaide, since she needed to rule out that she had been infected, and then she traveled to Sydney alone to acclimatise, while his coach, Conchita Martínez, the physio, Adriana Forti, and the trainer, Santiago de Martino, recovered before being able to join the expedition.

“Everything we are all going through has accumulated a bit here. This COVID thing is messing up. Now I think we have to calm down, we have to train well again. This hurts a lot, it’s the Australian Open and I’ve left much sooner than I wanted. Today I’m going to have a hard time, but tomorrow I’ll start planning what I’m going to do with my team now, yes, together, and look forward”.

Returning to the game, Muguruza is not consoled by the fact that Cornet had a great game: “It does not console me, because in the end if she is further back in the ranking and I am further ahead, you have to try to overcome this type of situation. It is true that he has played very well, much more aggressive than his tennis usually is. And I think everything has fallen on his side. I would have liked to improve the selection of my shots, I think I have made quite a few unforced misses, perhaps because I was rushing, perhaps for trying to be too aggressive at times. In short, it has been difficult for me to know how to choose well how to play”.

Rest in Switzerland

The woman from Caracas told where her immediate future is: “For now, I’m going to go back home to Switzerland, and I’ll be calm that it’s needed after a rather stressful start to the year this month in Australia for various reasons. I’m leaving a lot sooner than I thought. I will continue working and I will attend the tour of Dubai and Doha, which I like. After a bad result, it’s time to look forward to see what I can improve and what am I going to bring to the next different game so that this doesn’t happen again”.
