The United States and Mexico announced this Monday the withdrawal of their joint candidacy to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, to focus on hosting the 2031 edition, so Spain’s defense of the title will be in Brazil or Europe in a project between Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.
The United States and Mexican Soccer Federations are calling for the competition to have the same investment as the men’s tournament, “eliminating investment disparities to fully maximize the commercial potential of the women’s tournament.”
US Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone said that “hosting a World Cup is a huge undertaking” and that “having more time” to prepare allows them to “maximize their impact around the world.” “I am proud of our commitment to providing equitable experiences to players, fans and all stakeholders. Changing our bid will allow us to host a record-breaking World Cup in 2031, which will help grow and raise the level of women’s football both here as all over the world,” he warned.
For his part, the top leader of Mexican soccer, Ivar Sisniega, stressed his commitment to “organize a memorable and historic Women’s World Cup, from which the players and fans will benefit.”
After the resignation of the United States and Mexico, there are only two candidates left on the table to host the 2027 tournament. Brazil, which starts as the great favorite, will compete with the joint candidacy of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, which have fewer options given that the 2019 edition was also held on European soil, in France. The final decision will be announced on May 17 at the FIFA congress in Thailand.
