The UCI criticizes the transfer of Evenepoel by helicopter and considers that it violates “equity”

MADRID, 13 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The International Cycling Union (UCI) has regretted that the Soudal Quick-Step has used a helicopter to transfer its riders, including the favorite Remco Evenepoel, after the end of the seventh stage of the Giro d’Italia, and considers that the incident “goes against the principles of fair play and equity”, for which reason it will study “measures and sanctions”.

“This constitutes an advantage that goes against the principles of fair play and the regulatory provisions to guarantee equal treatment in the transfer of teams to their hotels,” the agency said. “The UCI strongly condemns this behavior that goes against the principles of fair play and equity, fundamental values of the sport,” he added.

In addition, the UCI indicated that the use of this type of transport “goes against the principle of reducing the carbon footprint”, as established in the specifications of the UCI WorldTour organizer. “The UCI will take the necessary measures and sanctions to ensure that such a practice does not occur in the future,” he warned.

The seventh stage of the ‘corsa rosa’ was held this Friday between Capua and the Gran Sasso d’Italia over 218 kilometers, and the Italian Davide Bais (EOLO-Kometa) was proclaimed the winner. Norwegian Andreas Leknessund (Team DSM) is leading the race, with Evenepoel second, 28 seconds behind.
