The ten facts of a decade of Cholo

There is nothing more tangible to assess the Diego Simeone era, who turns ten this Thursday, than the data; a collection of records in the history of Atlético de Madrid that propose him as the best manager in its 118-year history:

1 – THE COACH WITH THE MOST TITLES OF THE ATHLETIC:

Not even Luis Aragonés, who won six titles in his 612 official meetings with Atlético de Madrid (an Intercontinental Cup in 1975; a League in 1976-77; three Copas del Rey in 1976, 1985 and 1992 and a Super Cup of Spain, in 1985), Diego Simeone, the coach with the most trophies in the history of the rojiblanco club, has resisted with eight: two leagues (2013-14 and 2020-21), one Copa del Rey (2012-13) , two European Leagues (2011-12 and 2017-18) and three Super Cups, one from Spain (2014) and two from Europe (2012 and 2018). José Villalonga completes the podium in this regard, with two Spanish Cups in 1960 and 1961 and a Recopa in 1962.

2 – THE MOST WINNING RED-AND-WHITE TECHNICIAN:

Nor has anyone won more games than him with Atlético de Madrid, surpassed Luis Aragonés in March 2021. ‘El Sabio de Hortaleza’ achieved 308 victories in 612 official matches with the club of his life; The ‘Cholo’ already has 326 (18 more) in 551 games (61 fewer games). 3 – 59 PERCENT WINS, 17 PERCENT LOSSES:

Simeone’s 326 victories in 551 matches with Atlético represent a 59.1 success rate in his matches with the rojiblanco team. At the same time, they have only lost 17 percent of their matches across all competitions, 95 out of 551. The 130 draws (23 percent) complete their records in this era, with 709 goals for and 418 against.

4 – THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS WON THE LEAGUE AGAINST REAL MADRID AND BARCELONA IN THE LAST 17 YEARS:

No one but ‘his’ Atlético has been able to beat Real Madrid and Barcelona over 38 games in the last seventeen years. And he has done it up to two times. In 2013-14, when he reached the record for points in a league in the history of the rojiblanco club, with 90, and in 2020-21, when he gave the Madrid team its eleventh league.

5 – THE BEST STREAM WITHOUT LOSING IN 118 YEARS:

He also signed the best unbeaten streak in the history of Atlético de Madrid: the 23 consecutive games that began on April 15, 2012, when they beat Rayo Vallecano 0-1, and ended on November 3 of that same year, with the 2-0 defeat against Valencia at the Mestalla. In between, he added 19 wins and three draws, apart from winning a Europa League and a European Super Cup in that section.

6 – THE WIDEST VICTORIES SERIES AS LOCAL:

Since the 1939-40 and 1940-41 campaigns, with Ricardo Zamora as coach of that glorious Atlético Aviación that premiered the Liga record in the history of Atlético de Madrid, the Atletico Madrid’s record of consecutive wins at home was unsurpassed … until Simeone passed him. So it was twelve consecutive victories. He set them at fourteen, stopped on March 8, 2013 by the 0-1 defeat against Real Sociedad at the Vicente Calderón stadium.

7 – THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AS A STANDARD:

In none of his nine entire League campaigns as head of the team, Diego Simeone’s Atlético de Madrid has finished off the qualifying podium, always with the ticket for the group stage of the Champions League, infallible in that situation so transcendent for the club’s economy. There are only six other teams that have achieved the same in that period: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Juventus and Paris Saint Germain. Not one more.

At the edge of glory. With him, the team has played two Champions League finals, both with a cruel outcome against Real Madrid: the defeat in extra time (4-1) in Lisbon in 2014, with the white 1-1 in the 93rd minute , and on penalties in Milan in 2016.

9 – GRIEZMANN’S 140 GOALS:

No one has played as much as Koke Resurrección under Diego Simeone nor has anyone scored as many goals as Antoine Griezmann, already among the five best ‘gunners’ in the history of the rojiblanco club by the hand of the Argentine coach, with whom he has achieved 140 goals in 275 games.
