At around 2:20 p.m. (almost half an hour later than planned) and, visibly moved, Margarita signed her declaration of abdication in a Council of State, where she transferred her powers to that of her son. her Federico of her. At 3 p.m., with rigorous punctuality, the prime minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed King Frederick X the new monarch, on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace. Minutes later, Frederick and Mary, along with the rest of the royal family, greeted the Danish crowd from Christiansborg Palace. From the balcony, Federico X gave a brief speech, where he did not forget his mother: the other main protagonist of the day.

“My mother has ruled for 52 years. For half a century she has kept up with the times. Forever, my mother will be remembered as a regent beyond the ordinary,” he noted to a standing ovation. “My mother has managed to become one with her kingdom. Today the throne passes. My hope is to become the king of tomorrow. It is a responsibility that I assume with respect, pride and great joy. I face the future with the certainty that I am not alone,” he said.

The ceremony, marked by austerity and sobriety, did not have the presence of the Church. Something that did happen with the English monarch, crowned before the Archbishop of Canterbury. On this occasion, from the Danish capital, the ceremony was marked by the prominence of three women: Margarita, the outgoing emeritus; Queen Mary and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

After the solemn ceremony, the already royal standards will be transported by carriage from the Palace of Christian IX, where the current queen resides, to the Palace of Frederick VIII, residence of Frederick and Mary.

This Tuesday, the Royal House shared the image of the float, which was used this Sunday for the change of throne. The same one where Margarita has traveled, her son and her daughter-in-law have used it. This is the Golden Jubilee carriage, built between 1891 and 1892, by the float manufacturer FC Schulz in Copenhagen. It was a gift from the artisans of Copenhagen to Christian IX and Queen Louise. At the request of the monarch, it was built lightly and elegantly in black lacquered mahogany with the Danish coat of arms painted on both doors. It was the first in Denmark to have electric lights both inside and outside.
