The Supreme Court of Brazil restores Ednaldo Rodrigues as president of the CBF

RÍO DE JANEIRO (BRAZIL), 5 Ene. (dpa/EP) –

The Supreme Court of Brazil restored the dismissed president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), Ednaldo Rodrigues, to his position this Thursday, after annulling a precautionary measure previously adopted by the court of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

FIFA had threatened the CBF with sanctions if the federation's intervention led to the election of a new president. The sanctions would have included the immediate suspension of the national team and all club teams from all international competitions.

In December, a court in the state of Rio de Janeiro removed Rodrigues from his position as president of the CBF. He was accused of electoral irregularities that supposedly led to his election in 2022.

According to the court ruling, a new president should have been elected within 30 days. The Supreme Court has prevented this with its decision.

Judge Gilmar Mendes' provisional ruling stated that there was a “clear risk of harm.” To avoid this damage, it was necessary to adopt a precautionary measure.

In its statutes, FIFA denies the interference of state bodies, and therefore also the December ruling of the Rio de Janeiro court.

In case of suspension, all officials and referees would also be banned from international matches and the organisers.

A FIFA delegation is scheduled to meet with José Perdiz, who took over on an interim basis, and Ednaldo Rodrigues next week, between January 8 and 10.
