The Spanish U-19 team makes a solvent debut in the Women’s Basketball World Cup

MADRID, 15 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish women’s basketball team won this Saturday by a wide 83-68 against Australia, with an outstanding performance by the Asturian guard Iyana Martín, during the first day of Group A in the Under-19 World Championship, which will take place is contesting in the Community of Madrid.

On the field of the Los Espartales Sports Complex, in Alcalá de Henares, the players trained by Bernat Canut had a more than solvent debut against an opponent where forward Nyadiew Puoch stood out with 13 points. In the front rows, the aforementioned Iyana Martín scored 16 points and the Tenerife guard Elena Buenavida scored 15.

Except for 0-2 and 2-4 in the first minutes, Australia was always trailing on the scoreboard. The hosts swept through the first half (54-28) and then they knew how to suffer during a more complicated second half, always staying on top. Not in vain, the accumulated partial of 10-22 in the third period remained a mere scare.

Thanks to this victory by +15, Spain provisionally occupies the second position of its group. In the lead is France, who beat Argentina by a resounding 42-96 in the Jorge Garbajosa Pavilion (Torrejón de Ardoz). For the second day, Spanish and French will face each other this Sunday (8:15 p.m.) at the Alcala headquarters.
