The Spanish sailors María Perelló and Marta Cardona, first leaders of the 420 World Championship in Alicante

Greeks Iakovina Kerkezou and Danae Giannouli also occupy the top spot

MADRID, 24 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The World Championship in the 420 class began this Monday in Alicante with complicated wind conditions, which only allowed a test to be held in the two female groups and which were won by the Spanish María Perelló and Marta Cardona, together with the Greeks Iakovina Kerkezou and Danae Giannouli.

The Race Committees left punctually and, after noon, the entire fleet was at sea because it was the scheduled time for the start of the tests. The wind from the southern component was not clean, with numerous rolls and ups and downs in intensity. Even so, in the female category, it was possible to complete one test per group.

In the yellow group, Perelló and Cardona from the Balearic Islands arrived at the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante (RCRA) in the group of favourites. Thus, the junior world champions and absolute runners-up showed potential by winning their test. While in the blue group the new European champions, Kerkezou and Giannouli, did the same and now both crews lead the general classification (one point each).

The second place is occupied by the Brazilians Joana Gonçalves/Gabriela Vassel (yellow) and the Catalans Nora García de la Casa/Mariona Ventura (blue). In addition, third are the Croatians Noela Petesic/Petra Gambiraza (blue) and the Canary Islands Paula and Isabel Laiseca (yellow), who compete in Alicante after proclaiming themselves 29er world champions in 2022 and after deciding in 2023 to make the leap to 420.
