The Spanish men’s rugby sevens team finished ninth in Singapore, the ninth round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, after winning the four-time circuit champion South Africa for the first time in its history in the semifinals (12 -5).
After not reaping any victory in the first day, the ‘Lions’ defeated the United States in the quarterfinals for ninth place (10-22); two attempts by Pol Pla, one by Manu Moreno and another by the captain, Juan Ramos, were enough to advance to the semifinals.
There, the Paco Hernández signed their first victory in history against the four-time champions of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, South Africa. Despite the fact that the match began with a pose by the African team, tests by Pol Pla and Juan Ramos certified the historic victory (12-5) and the pass to the final.
In it, Spain secured the ninth position at the expense of Kenya (10-26). Trials by Nico Nieto, Jaime Mata, Manu Moreno and Alejandro Laforga allow him to add eight points to keep up with Uruguay for eleventh position in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, although he drops to twelfth place. The next destination will be Toulouse from May 12 to 14.
