“The sensations that Suárez transmits to me are of permanent security”

The Uruguayan soccer coach, diego alonsohighlighted this Wednesday the “security” that the forward transmits “permanently” to him Luis Suarezof which he said he did not know whether or not he would retire from Celeste after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Alonso made these statements at a face-to-face press conference, the first at the Celeste Complex – a sports venue located on the outskirts of Montevideo – since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020.

In it, in addition to reviewing the preparation matches that Uruguay will play in June on the way to the Qatar event, Alonso analyzed the current situation of some of his references, including Suárez, the Celeste’s all-time top scorer.

“The sensations that he transmits to me as a coach are permanently of security, of having a person who, the first day I sat down to talk with him, told me: ‘I want to play, but if I have to be a substitute I will be the number 1 fan‘”, indicated the Uruguayan coach.

Although Alonso commented that “he is a footballer who has marked an era”, he did not want to talk about his possible goodbye to the national team, although this is taken for granted, just like the other celestial references, such as Diego Godín, Edinson Cavani, Fernando Muslera or Martín Cáceres.

“I don’t know if he’s retiring, I don’t think he’s going to retire. Why do I have to limit someone to stop playing? They don’t limit themselves… it’s not up to me”, commented the coach, who added that he enjoys with him and that he is someone who “makes work easy” for the technicians, since his attitude “is always to the benefit of the national team”.

The Atlético de Madrid striker will not continue with the rojiblanca entity next seasonbut his immediate fate is still unknown.

Asked about it, as well as about the future of Cavaniwho will not continue at Manchester United either, Alonso said he has “no recommendation” for his players and that he is “very calm with the decision” they will make.

In any case, he defended his idea that “there are players who are selected” and that, whether or not they have continuity in their respective teams, they arrive at La Celeste and always show “the right level”.

Alonso was appointed coach of Uruguay last December, after the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) ceased in November, in full qualifying for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, the long-time Óscar Washington Tabárez after almost 16 years at the head of the sky blue bench.
