MOSCOW, 23 Dic. (dpa/EP) –
The Russian Football Federation will debate this Friday the possibility of leaving UEFA and moving to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) so that both its team and its teams can compete again without problems since they are banned due to the invasion of Ukraine.
“The question of leaving UEFA is related to the decision of UEFA and FIFA on February 28, according to which Russian clubs and the national team were excluded from international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine,” the agency remarked. Russian state news ‘Tass’.
The decision excluded Russia from the play-off matches for the World Cup in Qatar and the country was also left out of the draw for the qualifying phase for Euro 2024. Despite this, its national team has played three friendly matches since the start of the war against Ukraine against Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, former Soviet territories and which are within the AFC.
On the one hand, Moscow hopes that this move to another confederation will once again give its soccer teams a more competitive practice and, on the other, it would allow it to show that Russia is not politically isolated.
