A new era begins at Mediaset once the departure of Paolo Vasile, the company’s top manager for 23 years, has been consummated. From now on, Borja Prado will lead the group as president of Berlusconi’s Spanish subsidiary and there will be two CEOs: Alessandro Salem and Massimo Musolino.
The new leadership must begin a thorough renovation of the Mediaset channel grid, especially Telecinco, if it wants to solve the very harsh audience crisis that the group is suffering, as has been evidenced by the monthly data for December and the disastrous triple historical minimum of Mediaset, Telecinco and Cuatro. Antena 3 has been the leading channel for 14 consecutive months.
The Telecinco grid, the group’s main channel and flagship, has more and more holes, with big problems in prime time (Mediafest, For Life, Nightmare in Paradise…) and the afternoon (Save me continues in low hours and the new 25 words y Chain reaction have been a failure). Only the morning, with Ana Rosa Quintana, continues to be solvent.
Prado intends to renew the contents, the direction and also the faces of the chain. The manager counts, according to The confidential, with a budget of 100 million euros to try to change this situation, especially from the second quarter of the year, since the first three months of 2023 have been designed by Vasile. And in the spotlight is once again Jorge Javier Vázquez, as we advanced weeks agowho fears his future, even though he has renewed his long-term contract.
Paolo Vasile closed that agreement with the presenter last September. And he would have done it without consulting Borja Prado because, according to the aforementioned media, Vasile had the power to approve any expense without going through the board of directors as long as the amounts did not reach two million euros. Now without the Italian, the new managers would be studying “how much it would cost them” to get rid of the presenter or remove him from the channel’s large formats, despite the fact that the contract he signed would join the chain for at least one more year. Among other things, the managers would not be comfortable with Jorge Javier’s excessive political positioning, which he has always boasted of both in the programs he presents and in the social networks or the media in which he writes.
On the other hand, the changes could also reach the news, where Prado now rules as head of its editorial line since Mediaset reformulated its management structure. The future of Juan Pedro Valentín and Pedro Piqueras would be up in the air and the latter would have requested to meet with the president of Mediaset España around Christmas to discuss his continuity. One of the names that are beginning to sound for the News area is that of Antonio Caño, former director of The country.
