This Saturday marks the 30th anniversary of the death of Juan Gómez ‘Juanito’, one of the most remembered footballers in the history of Spanish football and, of course, by Málaga, club he defended and with whom he got promotion to the First Division in the 1987-88 season. The coach was Ladislao Kubala.
For this reason, Malaga wanted to join the acts of homage that, in his memory, are being held in Fuengirola, the hometown of the remembered genius. For this, he wanted the captain, David Lombán, to wear a bracelet with Juanito’s name and his lifelong number ‘7’ number in the match that was played this Saturday in Montilivi against Girona. But as reported by the club through its official channels, this has not been possible due to the imperative of official regulations.
This is how Malaga explains it in its official statement. “Malaga Club de Fútbol, taking advantage of the 30th anniversary of his death, wanted to pay tribute to Juanito’s memory last night at the Girona-Málaga match held in Montilivi. The intention, that the team captain wear a commemorative bracelet with his name and the number 7 that he wore for so many years. It could not be carried out due to the current regulations of the competition. In these difficult sports moments, Juanito is the best example of how to overcome adversity. His spirit will always be linked to Málaga”.
Last Friday during the preview of the documentary ‘Juanito’ at the Peace Palace in Fuengirola, several former Real Madrid and Malaga players came to pay their respects to the gigantic figure of the remembered ‘Supersonic’ as the famous narrator called him , also deceased. Héctor Del Mar. Agustín Rodríguez, Ricardo Gallego, Poli Rincón, Paco Pineda, Roberto López Ufarte, Esteban Vigo, Jesús Gámez or Manu Sánchez, among others.
