The red card that Dest received was referred to the USMNT head coach Berhalter as a “dumb mistake.”

Despite suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the hosts in Trinidad and Tobago on Monday night, the United States masculine national soccer squad was still able to secure a spot in the 2024 Copa America tournament.

American defender Sergio Dest was carted off following what manager Gregg Berhalter described as a “dumb mistake.”

The United States entered the match, which also functioned as a quarterfinal clash in the Concacaf Nations League, leading 3-0 on aggregate following a win on Thursday.

In the 25th minute of the encounter, Antonee Robinson scored a goal to give the United States entire control of the match.

From that point on, everything appeared to be going according to plan, with Trinidad and Tobago only having to outscore the United States by a margin of five goals in order to change the outcome.

But just 14 minutes later, Dest was shown one of the most questionable red cards in the annals of the United States national team’s competition.

Dest, who appeared to be unhappy with a judgment that had been made by an official a few moments before, punted the ball first into the seats.

Dest continued to argue with the referee, much to the dismay of his teammates, most especially Giovanni Reyna.

As a result, the referee sent Dest a red card when he received a second yellow card. “It is concerning since that’s not who we would like to represent,” according to Berhalter.

“That is not the collective identity that we hold. We take great satisfaction in maintaining mental discipline and fighting through any kind of circumstance, regardless of how favorable or unfavorable it may be.

“That is not the collective identity that we hold. We take great satisfaction in maintaining mental discipline and fighting through any kind of circumstance, regardless of how favorable or unfavorable it may be. It was very evident that Sergino’s remark was not the acceptable approach to proceed.

Despite losing the second leg of the contest, the United States was able to come out on top and win the match with a score of 4-2 overall.

After the game, Dest took to Instagram to express his regret to both his teammates and the fans.

After receiving a red card earlier in the year against Mexico in the semifinals of the Nations League, Dest became the first United States player since 1990 to get two red cards during the same calendar year.

This accomplishment was accomplished by Dest’s performance against Mexico. Because of this, he won’t be able to participate in the semifinals of the Nations League in March.

It is noteworthy that his teammates rarely even challenged the cards that were being given out.

They decided to focus their attention on Dest, a starting fullback who is 23 years old. Gio Reyna made an effort to put him at ease. Yunus Musah made an effort to put him in his place.

Following the appearance of the red, the captain, Tim Ream, seized him and began to yell at him.

Dest was also yelled at by the goalkeeper, Matt Turner, who then physically ejected Dest from the playing field.

After some time, Beasley referred to it as “baby behavior.” Julie Foudy, a former star for the United States Women’s National Team, described it as “so selfish and unnecessary.”

“There were a lot of different words,” remarked Ream at the halftime break, which occurred minutes later.

Berhalter referred to them as having a “firm” tone. According to Ream, he was unable to discuss many of them in public.

In the meantime, the public conversation descended into chaos. Former players have taken charge of the organization. The outburst made by Dest was referred to by Herculez Gomez as “completely shameful.”

During his appearance on the halftime show for TNT, DaMarcus Beasley referred to it as “crazy” and “unacceptable.”
