MADRID, 20 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Partido Popular announced on Friday that it has submitted a non-legislative motion regarding the claim for the bronze medal at the Paralympic Games by the Spanish athlete Elena Congost and her guide Mia Carol, in which it calls on the Government to “unconditionally support” the claim by the Spanish Paralympic Committee (CPE) and “the granting of the scholarship in any case.”
The Catalan athlete lost this medal in Paris 2024 after being disqualified from the marathon event for visually impaired athletes for dropping the rope that tied her to her guide to prevent him from falling just a few metres from the finish line and when they were almost four minutes ahead of the fourth-placed athlete.
The Popular Party’s parliamentary group, which has requested in its letter that its request be debated in the Committee on Education, Vocational Training and Sport, recalled that Congost’s action “did not influence the result” and that it did not go against “fair play”.
The PP also refers to the principles of Olympism, which has “respect” as one of its “central axes” and makes it clear that the performance of the Spaniard “as a person and athlete”, in addition to making one “proud”, makes it “required, because it is fair, that the disqualification be reviewed and the bronze medal recognised”.
