Already cited in the chronicles of the beginning of the century as ‘merengue club’, it was the journalist and sports broadcaster Matías Prats Cañete who popularized the term in a clear allusion to the white color of the uniform. Another of the best known nicknames is that of ‘Vikings’, although in this regard there are two hypotheses. The first has its origin after the exhibition of Real Madrid in the final of the 1960 European Cup, in which it would beat Eintratch Frankfurt 7-3, ‘The Times’ would publish: “Real Madrid walks through Europe as the Vikings used to walk around, destroying everything in their path ”. The second is based on the large number of signings from northern Europe (Gunter Netzer, Paul Breitner, Henning Jensen, Uli Stielike …) made by Real Madrid, then chaired by Santiago Bernabéu, during the 70s.
