After an atypical league season like no other and results – given the previous years – also atypical, Real Madrid now faces the icing on the cake. The Champions. And it does so, paradoxically, trusting a team that, of course, has earned its credentials but that, just a year ago, had to be changed from top to bottom.
When the Whites closed the League losing at home to Betis, everything predicted that the summer of 2019 would mean all the change that the summer of 2018 did not mean with the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. Thereafter, the club got down to business and invested. Hazard, Mendy, Jovic, Rodyrgo and Militao. And now, a year later, it can be said without error that none of them will be the main bulwark to try to beat City and yes the Modric, Kroos or Marcelo which fans have already seen.
And that is not exactly a disadvantage. Not much less. The season -especially after the confinement- of all those mentioned has been to take off the hat but what does result is symptomatic of the passage of time and that the difference between one project and another is still evident.
There is no doubt that Florentino's latest 'junior' signings are called to be important players within the club. And within the soccer planet. But it is also welcome to think that Zidane still has to trust players that he himself was tired of winning. Curious.
Thus, in this way Real Madrid faces its European date. With many of the culprits that the ‘team of the three Champions’ is remembered forever but with the uncertainty of whether, once again, they will respond as before.
