The Ohio State women’s basketball team beats No. 10 Indiana 74–69 to stay on top of the Big Ten standings.
Two weeks after beating then-No. 2 Iowa in overtime, Ohio State beat No. 10 Indiana 74–69 inside the Schottenstein Center on Sunday, in front of its home crowd. The win gave Ohio State another top-10 win.
While Indiana made a late run to come back after a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit, the game stayed close the rest of the way. Ohio State pulled off its ninth straight win.
Both Jacy Sheldon (25 points) or Cotie McMahon (20 points) scored a lot to help the Buckeyes win. Rebeka Mikulasikova and Taylor Thierry each scored 11 points.
Indiana lost, but Sara Scalia scored 25 points for them. However, Ohio State only let Indiana standout Mackenzie Holmes score 14 points.
The win brought Ohio State’s record to 19-3 overall and 10-1 in Big Ten play. With the win, the Buckeyes remain tied for first place in the conference standings with Iowa, with both teams right now a match ahead of Indiana.
Because Ohio State beat Iowa in the regular season, it would be the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Conference Tournament if the season ended today.
However, Ohio State still has to play Iowans on the road in their last regular-season game on March 3.
As a team, Ohio State is known for having the toughest defense in the Big Ten. Their full-court press on Sunday showed that.
The same full-court push that beat the Hoosiers in the semifinals of the Big Ten tourney last year did it again this year.
IU had a lot of trouble with Ohio State’s press throughout the game. During a short stretch within the second quarter, OSU guard Cotie McMahon grabbed the ball twice in a row before IU even got to midcourt.
The Hoosiers also had trouble with it after the break, as Chloe Moore-McNeil of Indiana threw this straight to Celeste Taylor of Ohio State as she came in under Ohio State’s basket.
As a result, IU doesn’t always handle the ball well; they turn it over 13 times per game. However, before the five-minute mark in the third quarter, the Hoosiers had scored 17 points, including five in just four minutes.
The annoying Buckeye defense didn’t end at midcourt, though. IU also lost the ball a lot of times near their own basket. Taylor picking off a pass in Yarden Garzon on the line for a three-pointer to end a 16-0 run for Ohio State made this even worse.
When it comes to college basketball, Ohio State’s women’s team is the best. Not even close. We’ve seen the men lose repeatedly and again.
The women are not at all like that. They are a top team that plays with heart and together. To be honest, it’s been this way for two years.
That was shown again on Sunday afternoon when Ohio State beat another top team. In a game between two of the strongest teams in the Big Ten, they beat Indiana 74–69.
This happened just a few weeks after Ohio State beat Caitlin Clark as well as the Iowa Hawkeyes. Both wins happened in the Schott.
Ohio State is led by Jacy Sheldon the whole season. She was in charge again on Sunday, when she scored 25 points and stole three balls.
The Ohio State Buckeyes possessed 10 steals as a team, and their defense is still as crazy as it has been all year. From the starting lineup, four players scored ten or more points.
Because of their overall record and top-shelf wins, Ohio State is likely to get the number one seed to the NCAA Tournament.
They are in first place in the Big Ten with a 19-3 record overall. The Bucks have a resume that not every other squad in the country can match.
I beg you to look at the women this season if you haven’t already. They are very good at basketball and play a fun style. To make the playoffs this year, they really should. They could also be in the running over a national title.
