The Ocean Race will start every four years and will have other regattas in between

The next edition will also start in Alicante in 2026-27

MADRID, 14 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Ocean Race revealed its future this Saturday prior to the start of the 50th anniversary edition in Alicante, a Spanish port that will also be the starting point for the next 2026/27 edition, as revealed by the president of the regatta, Richard Brisius, who announced
that the emblematic world tour will start every four years and will have other intermediate regattas between editions.

A day before the 50th anniversary kicks off, regatta organizers unveiled a schedule of events that will span the next decade. Brisius confirmed the still unofficial rumors until this Saturday that Alicante will repeat as a start in the next edition, during the winter months of 2026-27.

In addition, after the success of the first edition of The Ocean Race Europe last summer, this event will celebrate its second edition at the end of the summer of 2025. Both the round the world regatta and The Ocean Race Europe will continue in four-year cycles.

“This is an important and exciting moment for The Ocean Race. We are on the eve of a historic World Tour which starts tomorrow. It is the first like The Ocean Race, the 14th edition in our history, and it comes as we celebrate our 50th anniversary” Brisius said.

“On this occasion, we support all those who have turned this regatta into the emblematic event that it is today. From the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973, through the 20 years of the Volvo Ocean Race, to where we are today as The Ocean Race, the regatta has undergone many changes,” he added.

In addition, the president of the regatta recalled the commitment to the environment. “But the core values remain: The Ocean Race is the toughest team event in the world of sport and we will take more and more action to protect the health of the ocean, recognize the inherent rights of the ocean and listen to the voice of the ocean. This will never change,” he said.

As far as the boats are concerned, the IMOCAs, which debuted in The Ocean Race last Sunday, will also compete in The Ocean Race Europe in 2025 and The Ocean Race 2026-27.

Meanwhile, the award-winning Racing with Purpose sustainability program, founded in partnership with 11th Hour Racing as Title Sponsor, will continue to be a core element of The Ocean Race well into the future.
