The La Jaula Movistar party in Gran Canaria began this Wednesday in Las Palmas as the first event of the host of the 2025 Copa del Rey, with the presence of the institutions that will make the tournament possible from February 13 to 16.
Everyone is already warming up for the cup tournament with a common goal: “We hope it will be the best Cup that has been held so far,” was the message from the Parque del Rincón, next to Las Canteras Beach in the capital of Gran Canaria, seven months before the fans’ party is set to take place.
The president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, was very satisfied with the success of La Jaula Movistar, as a prelude to the cup. “What we are experiencing today, seeing the crowds packed, is an extraordinary prelude to what will be a journey of celebration over the next few months,” he said in statements provided by the ACB.
“We know about the love for basketball on this island, we are having a great time in Gran Canaria and we are hopeful to see all the fans here celebrating,” he added. Similarly, the general director of the ACB, José Miguel Calleja, did not hide his excitement about the Copa del Rey Gran Canaria 2025.
“Years ago we decided to kick off the Jaula Movistar and we are very excited to be back here. The Club, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the ACB think that it will certainly be the best Cup that has been held here, and we hope that it will also be the best Cup that has been held so far. We are very excited and eager to get rolling,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Councillor for Sports of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Aridany Romero, claimed the importance of La Jaula Movistar as a prelude to the cup. “It is a set of actions within the great agreement between the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the ACB. This is the first, months before the final phase, and for us it is a satisfaction. We are going to continue to support it and we will be discussing it together with the ACB in the coming weeks,” he said.
For his part, Juan José Flores, territorial director of Telefónica in the Canary Islands, claimed the “pride” and “joy” of seeing an event like the Jaula Movistar in Gran Canaria. The president of Dreamland Gran Canaria, Sitapha Savané, shared the high expectations of the institutions, recalling that the tournament is “the biggest basketball event in the country” and that it is “the Cup with the greatest impact in Europe.”
“Being able to host it on the island is a huge impact, both economically and in terms of reputation for the island and for the club. We are very excited, we are collaborating daily with the ACB and the Cabildo de Gran Canaria to make it the best Cup we have ever had,” he confessed.
The snapshot of the institutional representatives, with the presence of Leticia López, manager of the Insular Institute of Sports, and Carla Campoamor, councilor delegate of government for the Area of Sports, Youth and Citizen Participation, symbolized the starting shot of the cup tournament, which begins its countdown.
