The list of the World Athletics Championships that never leaves you indifferent

The Spanish coach offers this Thursday the pre-selection for Budapest

MADRID, 2 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The national athletics coach, José Peiró, will communicate this Thursday the list of shortlisted for the next World Championship in Budapest, a call that promises its crumb and even controversy between the different types of merits and the criteria of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA).

The race to be in Budapest ended this Wednesday, prior to the Championship, with the final update of the rankings by World Athletics, the International Federation. On the track, the Spanish Championship in Torrent (Valencia), last week, was the last option for many to win the position.

After the Valencia event and before Peiró had to decide, the triple jumper Ana Peleteiro, Olympic bronze, ruled herself out while combining her recent motherhood with the competition. From August 19 to 27, a broad Spanish representation is expected, although in many tests there will be no Spanish athletes since many of them will go to the Hungarian capital to compete in the relay.

The World Cup does not rest after being held last year in the United States, still aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic on the sports calendar, and in that close to Eugene the list left a good string of comments, especially on social networks. Ignacio Fontes was the most forceful, denouncing leaks and forceful against the criteria of the RFEA. The walker Álvaro Martín also raised his voice to defend his discipline.

In the past European Championship in Munich, which took place in August, there were also several complaints. Peiró understood the media repercussion of the Spanish teams and the loudspeaker of social networks, but defended then that “absolutely nothing” had changed in the selection criteria “in recent months”, public for all interested parties.

A year later, the runrún has already been on the ‘street’ for days and the list will surely not leave you indifferent. The final one will be on August 8, so until then there may be resignations, injuries and changes. The doubts in the Spanish team revolve mostly around the 800 men’s or the possible injury of Jorge Ureña in Torrent.

Iñaki Cañal and Óscar Husillos are a priori out of 400 per hundredths after the Spanish Championship, although they will go to Budapest for the relay, but Pol Retamal, ‘heavyweights’ like Carlos Tobalina and Belén Toimil, Paula Sevilla or Marta García are out in principle for not having the minimum of the Federation. Last summer, Spain added the bronzes of Mohamed Katir, once again an important asset, and Asier Martínez, absent due to injury.
