Rigobert Song, former captain of Cameroon, was appointed as the country’s coach on Tuesday, replacing the dismissed Toni Conceiçao, just three weeks before the playoff that will decide which African national teams qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
The legendary Rigobert Song, who managed the ‘Indomitable Lions’ U-13 squad, was capped 137 times by Cameroon, whose shirt he defended for 17 years. He played four World Cups and eight African Cups. He was a player for Liverpool and West Ham, but he also lived stages in France, Germany, Italy and Turkey.
Conceiçao came to Cameroon to third place in the African Cup played in 2022, of which that country was host, but the leadership of the Cameroonian Football Federation has already informed him that he would not renew his contract.
Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Federation, said: “The next tasks of our team require a new orientation, a new breath.” In the final playoff in Africa for the World Cup, Cameroon hosts Algeria in the first leg in Yaoundé on March 25 and the second leg is played in Blida on the 29th. The winner goes to the World Cup.
